Winsteps problems and error codes

For Windows-related and other problems, see www.winsteps.com/problems.htm

Winsteps functions under Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, but not Windows XP or earlier.

Error codes are reported by Winsteps for which no automatic action is possible.

W1

Winsteps expects its input files to be in MS-DOS text file format, i.e., readable by a text editor such as NotePad.

If in doubt,

1. Open the Winsteps file in Microsoft Word (or equivalent)

2. "Save As"

either: "Text with line breaks"

or: "Plain Text", "MS-DOS"

Is this a Text file with line breaks? Variable=Value expected here: ...

The file is not in standard "text" file format. This can be reported for files created on a Mac.

{\rtf1\....

Your control file is in RTF, not TXT format.

ÿþ

Your control file is in Unicode, not ANSI coding.

þÿ

Your control file is in Unicode Bigendian, not ANSI coding.

Your control file is in UTF-8 coding.

W2

UNRECOGNIZED VARIABLE (CHECK SPELLING): Facets = 3

This can occur when a Facets specification file is submitted to Winsteps.

Warning: IGNORED (too long):

The control-variable value is too long. The usable characters are actioned. The excess characters are ignored.

W4

Oops!  Item labels = ..., but NI=...4

The count of item labels between &END and END LABELS does not match the number of items. The analysis is done, but the item labels in the Output Tables may be incorrect.

W5

Oops! Use "Edit" menu to make corrections, then restart

There is a problem with your Winsteps control file, or your Extra Specifications. Use the Winsteps "Edit" menu to make corrections, and then the "File" menu to "Exit and Restart" your analysis.

NI=1. Two or more items required.

Responses to more than one item are required in order to construct additive measures from ordinal data

Only one person. Two or more persons required

Responses by more than one person are required in order to construct additive measures from ordinal data

No non-extreme persons/items, see RFILE= or CODES= may not match the data

All the data have been eliminated as extreme. Please verify that the control instructions match the data. See also Guttman data.

W12

TEMPORARY DELETED item. MATCHING person SUMMARY STATISTICS NOT AVAILABLE.

when you delete or deselect an item after the main analysis, then the person measures and fit statistics change. These need to be re-estimated, so another run of Winsteps is required. You can do this with Winsteps "File" menu, "Restart yourfilename.txt", and then enter the item delete/deselect instruction at the "Extra Specifications?" prompt.

W13

TEMPORARY DELETED person. MATCHING item SUMMARY STATISTICS NOT AVAILABLE.

when you delete or deselect a person after the main analysis, then all item measures and fit statistics change. These need to be re-estimated, so another run of Winsteps is required. You can do this with Winsteps "File" menu, "Restart yourfilename.txt", and then enter the person delete/deselect instruction at the "Extra Specifications?" prompt.

W14

Invalid line in PLFILE= (number extraction failed, code ... ) of ....

PLFILE= lines must start with person entry number, or first-last entry numbers, followed by person label. These numbers can be computed from a valid arithmetic formula, e.g., 2*4+7

W15

Invalid line in EDFILE= (....

Please see EDFILE= for description of correct line formats

W16

Unknown Command on DOS prompt line

Usually Winsteps controlfile outputfile variable=value, but other formats are allowed, see BATCH=

W17

... bytes of memory not available, File/Table not produced.

Winsteps can access up to 1.8GB of RAM memory for data, if this is available. See "not enough memory"

W18

... bytes of memory not available, using disk work file ...

Winsteps is using disk instead of RAM. Processing will be slower.
