RUMM2030+ Rasch analysis software and Winsteps |
RUMM, Rasch Unidimensional Measurement Model, Rasch analysis software was launched in 1997 by David Andrich, Barry Sheridan and Guanzhong Luo. RUMM is also an allusion to Georg Rasch's love of alcohol. In 1997, PC software was transitioning from MS-DOS to Windows. RUMM was initially ahead of Winsteps in implementing a graphical-user interface. RUMM analyses are controlled by dialog boxes. Winsteps interactive analyses are controlled by menus. Winsteps also allows non-interactive analyses in "Batch" mode.
RUMM versions implement pair-wise maximum likelihood estimation, PMLE. Winsteps implements JMLE and CMLE. For large datasets, the person and item estimates are effectively the same. An idiosyncrasy in PMLE is that items with the same item raw scores, p-values, for responses by the same persons may have slightly different estimates. This is more noticeable in the implementations of PMLE in some R Statistics packages.
RUMM2030+ and Winsteps have many analytical features in common, but each has unique features. RUMM can import the same rectangular data files as Winsteps. Over the years, RUMM and Winsteps have copied features from each other. If you require a feature that is in RUMM, or elsewhere, which is not yet implemented in Winsteps, please email me, mike@winsteps.com.
